Affine Hecke algebras are objects that arise quite naturally in the (representation) theory of reductive p-adic groups. However, it is possible to define these algebras without ever mentioning reductive groups (nor p-adic fields!) and only using more elementary and geometric notions. My intention is to describe this “geometrical” approach and briefly link it with the notion coming from group theory.
